UN Secretary-General António Guterres will begin his visit to Central Asia by visiting Uzbekistan on June 29. He will then consecutively visit Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. Guterres last visited the region in 2017. His current trip will last until July 7.
At a briefing in New York on Friday, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric reported that in each country, Guterres will meet with the head of state and high-ranking government representatives, familiarize himself with climate change-related projects, and engage with local activists.
On July 4, in Astana, the UN Secretary-General will participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit. In his speech, Guterres will stress the need to reaffirm commitment to multilateral principles based on the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. He will emphasize that the pursuit of peace should be at the center of these efforts.
The UN Secretary-General also plans to warn the international community that geopolitical disagreements hinder the effective addressing of common threats, including the fight against climate change.
On July 3-4, 2024, the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization will be held in Astana. The heads of the SCO member states will consider a wide range of current issues of political, trade, economic, cultural and humanitarian interaction. In addition, leaders of observer countries and dialogue partners are expected to participate in the forum.
