The United States is supporting Tajikistan in developing practical strategies for the economic integration of returning labor migrants, Interfax reports, citing the American diplomatic mission in Dushanbe.
Acting Deputy Chief of Mission John Riordan participated in consultations with Tajik partners on developing an entrepreneurial agenda in the area of migration. The initiative aims to create conditions enabling returning citizens to apply foreign experience to start businesses.
Particular emphasis is placed on expanding entrepreneurs' access to digital platforms, financial services, and e-commerce to foster sustainable small businesses. The project is being implemented against the backdrop of the significant socioeconomic role of migration in the country.
The initiative addresses a key vulnerability of the Tajik economy: its high dependence on external labor markets and remittances from Russia. Against the backdrop of tightening immigration laws in Russia, the development of microentrepreneurship and fintech is intended to absorb the returning workforce through self-employment.
For the US, this project serves as a soft power tool within the framework of the "C5+1" strategy, demonstrating alternative vectors for regional development through digitalization. However, the main challenges to implementation are the republic's small domestic market, high credit threshold, and underdeveloped financial infrastructure in rural areas. Without deep tax reforms and access to affordable capital, training programs will only have a limited impact.
