Micallef on behalf of the U.S. Embassy in Tajikistan in a congratulatory message posted on their Facebook page on the occasion of Tajik Press Day, observed on March 11, Asia Plus reports.

"Free and independent media provide the opportunity for society to stay informed, make fair and informed decisions, and hear diverse opinions," the message reads.

It is noted that independent media are a key element in building democracy, both in Tajikistan and around the world.

"The U.S. supports the professional development of journalists in Tajikistan through exchange programs, English language courses, familiarization trips, and technical support for the media," the publication highlights.

In it, the U.S. also calls on the Tajikistan government to protect the rights of journalists and respect their right to express opinions.
