The Ministry of Justice of Uzbekistan has added the Samarkand flatbread to the state register of geographical indications. The registration certificate was officially presented to the acting governor of the Samarkand region, Adiz Boboyev, by the Minister of Justice, Akbar Toshkulov, reports uz.sputniknews.ru.

According to the ministry, the use of this geographical indication is now strictly regulated by law, and its unauthorized use by individuals without the necessary rights will be considered a violation.

A geographical indication (GI) is a special designation on a product that confirms its origin from a specific geographical region and guarantees that its unique qualities, reputation, or other characteristics are directly linked to the place of production. It serves as a mark of quality that protects unique regional products from counterfeiting and helps consumers choose authentic goods.

Examples of well-known geographical indications worldwide include Champagne from the French province of Champagne, Parmesan cheese from the Italian province of Parma, or Kuban wines from the Kuban region. A GI ensures that a product is not only produced in a specific location but also meets established quality standards and traditional production methods.
