The Uzbek city of Shakhrisabz has been declared the tourist capital of the Economic Cooperation Organization in 2024, the press service of the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Heritage of Uzbekistan reports.
This decision was made at the 4th meeting of the OIC Ministers of Tourism at the suggestion of the leaders of the tourism sector of the Member States of the Organization.
When considering the candidacy of the city, the meeting participants took into account the rich history and cultural heritage of the city, the role of tourism in the development of the Silk Road, the potential for sustainable development of the industry, the Nova24.uz portal reports.
The city of Shakhrisabz is located in the Kashkadarya region in the south of Uzbekistan and has a 2000-year history and is included in the representative UNESCO World Heritage List.
The Uzbek authorities have planned to implement a program to improve the tourism infrastructure of the city and the entire Kashkadarya region, increase the potential of ecotourism, ethno-tourism and other areas, cultural events that widely reveal the intangible heritage of the region, tourism entrepreneurship, including increasing youth activity.
