During an official visit to Japan, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev met with Akihiko Tanaka, President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the press service of the Uzbek president reported.
The sides discussed expanding bilateral cooperation and advancing joint projects, whose current portfolio exceeds $8 billion. Additional initiatives worth more than $3 billion are under consideration in areas such as healthcare, energy, transport, education, and industry.
As part of the visit, new agreements were signed covering the development of economic zones, education, agriculture, transport infrastructure, and the supply of medical equipment.
President Mirziyoyev highly praised Japan’s long-standing support for the activities of the Uzbek-Japanese Human Resources Development Center and the Youth Innovation Center.
Special attention was given to expanding JICA’s involvement in the development of the energy sector, supporting youth and women’s entrepreneurship, promoting employment and poverty reduction, training advanced engineering specialists, and scaling up the “One Village – One Product” project.
The two sides expressed readiness to swiftly launch a project to establish a special economic zone for Japanese investors.
Concluding the meeting, the president emphasized the importance of timely preparation and ensuring the sustainability of project outcomes under the new cooperation program with JICA through 2030.
