Uzbekistan strengthens export-oriented textile industry

In Uzbekistan, the textile industry is widely represented in all regions and is one of the sectors with the highest number of jobs. Today, over 6,000 enterprises provide employment for 570,000 people, Ritmeurasia reports.

Over the past years, due to active attraction of investments and new technologies, the productivity in the industry has significantly increased. Last year, textile and garment production amounted to $8.2 billion, which is 4.2 times more than seven years ago. Also, in 2023, the export volume in the industry reached $3.1 billion. The geography of exports covers 83 countries.

However, an analysis of the export structure reveals certain shortcomings. For example, in the export of finished goods, there is a low share of products with high added value. Nearly 80% of exports still go to traditional partner markets. Export to Europe does not meet expectations.

These figures and facts were discussed at a videoconference chaired by the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

To increase export volumes to developed countries or for branding, international standards and certificates are required. However, only 175 enterprises meet these requirements. In 18 districts, the annual production volume of textile products does not exceed one million dollars.

At the meeting, problematic issues were analyzed, and the enormous potential of the industry was listed.

"Our only correct path in this industry is complete processing of existing raw materials to create high added value and reorientation of exports from traditional cheap markets to new, more expensive ones," noted President Mirziyoyev.
