Uzbekistan takes environment problems seriously

As part of the ongoing administrative reform in Uzbekistan, the Ministry of Natural Resources has been organized. It faces a lot of problems related to environmental protection.

Currently, at more than 500 enterprises, water treatment facilities do not meet the standards, and at some enterprises there are no such facilities at all. The small amount of compensation for causing harm to the environment has led to a situation where it is more profitable for enterprises to pay compensation than to install cleaning technology, according to a report from the Ritmeurasia.org portal.

In addition, the country annually generates 7 million tons of household waste, of which a little over 2 million are recycled. Landfill gas and wastewater, which form landfills, cause significant harm to nature.

These figures and facts were voiced at a meeting held by the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, and caused him a sharp reaction. In particular, he instructed to organize the activities of the environmental supervision inspectorate. It is also proposed to increase the amount of compensation for wastewater discharges in excess of the norm.

A project to generate 15 megawatts of electricity from waste has been launched at the old landfill in Akhangaran. Mirziyoyev noted the need to expand this experience by setting up waste processing and alternative energy production at other landfills.

In each district and city of Uzbekistan, small automated air pollution monitoring stations will be installed. Based on their data, a rating of air purity will be formed and the work of officials will be evaluated.

On April 30, 2023, a constitutional referendum will be held in Uzbekistan, after which an increase in the responsibility of state bodies for the state of the state is expected.
