Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan have signed an agreement under which Tashkent will help Bishkek develop coal deposits, the press service of the Kyrgyz Energy Ministry said.
"Minister of Energy of Kyrgyzstan Taalaibek Ibraev and Minister of Energy of the Republic of Uzbekistan Zhurabek Mirzamakhmudov signed agreements and a memorandum on the development of the energy sector of the two countries, assistance in the implementation of joint projects," the report says.
Among the documents signed by the two parties there is an agreement on the development of cooperation in the coal industry.
"Its main goal is to implement joint projects for the development of coal mines in the territory of the Kyrgyz Republic, to organize the export of coal from Kyrgyzstan to Uzbekistan. From Uzbekistan, the supply of equipment to Kyrgyzstan and the creation of a laboratory for analyzing the quality of coal," the ministry said.
The ministers also signed an agreement on cooperation in the field of gas and oil and a memorandum on joint study of the possibilities of implementing the construction of the Chatkal cascade of hydroelectric power plants with a total capacity of 1.8 GW.
"The signed agreements will contribute to the development of the energy sector of both countries and the elimination of electricity shortages," the Ministry of Energy of Kyrgyzstan said in a statement.
Bilateral relations between Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan received a new impetus after the visit of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to Kyrgyzstan on January 26-27, 2023.
