The Tashkent branch of the Russian National Research Nuclear University (MEPhI) will start training specialists in nuclear medicine, announced Kasym Tokhtakhunov, Head of the Department of Atomic Energy and Nuclear Technologies of the Agency for the Development of Atomic Energy under the Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan (Uzatom), the press service of Uzatom reports.
"The opening of this new direction is based on the increased need for the development of nuclear medicine in the country, and one of the important first steps is the training of qualified personnel," said Tokhtakhunov.
He specified that the trained specialists will work in the field of nuclear technologies used for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiological, oncological, neurological, and other socially significant diseases.
Tokhtakhunov noted that Uzbekistan needs not only doctors but also highly qualified personnel capable of working on complex installations, such as accelerators. In addition to doctors, one installation should have 4-5 medical physicists to ensure full operation.
The head of Uzatom explained that specialists must be able to perform complex physical calculations to determine the power of radiation dosage, penetration depth into tissue, and other parameters of medical installations.
It is expected that 50 people will be admitted to the new direction, who will be trained on a paid-contract basis. The enrollment of students will begin this year. Senior students will be able to practice at the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan (INP) and institutions of the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan.
