The Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), which unites ten countries of South, Central and Western Asia, intends to turn its region into a bloc of interconnected and sustainable economies, ECO Secretary General Khusrav Noziri said on Tuesday, TASS reports.
"The ECO is an intergovernmental economic forum of ten countries in South Central and West Asia, an organization determined to turn the region into a bloc of interconnected, sustainable economies through proper governance as well as accelerating trade activity," Noziri said.
According to him, one of the priority areas of activity is the liberalization of trade and the protection of investments, as well as the development of transport, logistics and trade corridors in every possible way.
The Secretary General also said that the ECO member countries are actively engaged in ensuring energy security, for which regional energy corridors are being created, clean energy sources are being introduced. According to him, the countries of the organization actively develop industrial cooperation, tourism, and are engaged in environmental protection.
The event is attended by the heads of the foreign ministries of Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, as well as heads of specialized agencies, regional institutions and affiliated bodies of the ECO.
ECO is a regional interstate economic organization founded in 1985. The current members of the ECO are Iran, Pakistan, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Since 1995, the ECO has had observer status with the UN and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The coordination and monitoring of the activities of the ECO is carried out by the secretariat, which is elected and appointed by the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the ECO member countries for a period of three years.
