A delegation from the Afghan Chamber of Commerce and Industry paid an official visit to Turkmenistan, during which the parties discussed expanding trade, economic, transport, and investment cooperation.
One of the key initiatives was the creation of a new transit route connecting Turkmenabat with the northern regions of Afghanistan and the city of Mazar-i-Sharif, which will strengthen transport connectivity between the two countries and expand access to regional markets, Orient.tm reports.
The talks also addressed the development of border infrastructure at the Aqina and Torghundi crossings, the removal of trade barriers, the implementation of joint investment projects, and cooperation in the oil, gas, and energy sectors.
The Afghan side proposed organizing a visit to the country for a delegation of 100 Turkmen entrepreneurs and investors to explore trade and logistics prospects. The Turkmen side supported the initiative, confirming its interest in further developing business ties.
The intensification of dialogue between Turkmenistan and Afghanistan demonstrates a gradual shift in bilateral relations from isolated infrastructure projects to a broader economic agenda. For Ashgabat, Afghanistan remains not only an important neighbor but also a strategic transit link, providing the shortest access to South Asian markets.
The proposal to create a new transport corridor through Mazar-i-Sharif complements ongoing regional initiatives, including the TAPI gas pipeline, power lines, and the development of rail links. With improved transport infrastructure and security, Afghanistan could become a key element in international transport routes connecting Central and South Asia.
For Turkmenistan, expanding its economic presence in Afghanistan means not only diversifying export routes but also strengthening the country's role as one of the region's key logistics and energy hubs. If implemented, these initiatives could provide additional impetus to regional trade and enhance the connectivity of all of Central Asia with the southern region.
