Apples to help Kazakhstan in oil production

Kazakhstani scientists have developed an eco-friendly method to halt or slow down corrosion in oil extraction equipment using apple pectin. Although practical testing of this new method is still pending, this innovation could significantly enhance the oil industry's efficiency and environmental sustainability, which is particularly vital for Kazakhstan, where oil production plays a crucial economic role, according to Kursiav.kz.

Oil extraction generates revenue for the country but also presents environmental challenges, such as oil spills, making corrosion control essential. This issue is especially relevant for major fields like Kashagan, where high levels of sulfur and sulfur compounds in the oil accelerate corrosion.

Researchers from East Kazakhstan Technical University, in collaboration with the Baltic Federal University, have created a protective coating for oil pipelines using copper-silver microparticles with apple pectin as a stabilizer. These materials bind sulfur-containing compounds, preventing corrosion, and the natural pectin reduces toxic substances and is biodegradable.

Expert Askar Ismailov claims that using pectin in anti-corrosion coatings can lower pipeline costs and operational expenses. However, he notes that widespread adoption of this technology may take 5-6 years, as many companies have already procured equipment, requiring time for testing and assessing economic viability.

In summary, the development of an eco-friendly anti-corrosion coating from apple pectin represents a promising solution for Kazakhstan’s oil industry, contributing to both economic benefits and environmental protection.
