Kazakhstan's authorities estimate the potential cost of constructing the country's first nuclear power plant (NPP) at $10-15 billion, stated Timur Zhantikin, the CEO of "Kazakh Atomic Power Plants" JSC, TASS reports.
The estimated cost of building the first NPP in the country is $10-15 billion. "Financing sources are currently being worked out, primarily involving international financial institutions. The project is currently considered a commercial one, without state intervention," Zhantikin was quoted by Zakon.kz.
In his address to the nation on September 1, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev proposed submitting the question of building the NPP to a nationwide referendum. In his opinion, it is necessary to continue public hearings and comprehensive discussions on this matter.
Earlier, the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan reported that, based on studies, the most preferable area for the construction of the NPP is the territory near the village of Ulken Zhambyl in the Almaty region. Currently, authorities are considering several potential suppliers of nuclear technology, including the Chinese company CNNC, the South Korean KHNP, Rosatom, and the French EDF.
