The capital of Tajikistan, Dushanbe, has been awarded the honorary title of “Cultural Capital of Asia — 2026” by the Executive Council of the Asian Mayors Forum, reports Asiaplus.tj.
The official decision was announced on December 1, 2025, at the forum’s closing session in Tehran. In addition to Dushanbe, other cities in the region received honorary titles: Baghdad was named the Tourist Capital of Asia, and Dubai — the Ecological Capital.
A statement from the Dushanbe city administration emphasized that this recognition is “a high honor” and “a great responsibility” for the city, which plans active cultural development and international cooperation in 2026.
Experts predict that the title of Cultural Capital could attract tourists, investments, and resources for the development of cultural infrastructure, including museums, theaters, festivals, and the restoration of historical sites.
Analysts note that this opens up opportunities for Dushanbe to:
- strengthen international cultural and economic ties;
- develop tourism and the cultural economy;
- implement international cultural projects and exchanges;
- modernize urban infrastructure and historical landmarks;
- enhance Tajikistan’s image on the cultural map of Asia.
The Dushanbe authorities have already announced plans for a series of events in 2026 focusing on culture, education, art, and intercultural dialogue.
