A memorandum of understanding was signed between the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the European Investment Bank, and the energy ministries of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan, Asiaplus.tj reports.
The document provides for the banks' participation in financing the construction of the Kambar-Ata-1 Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) in Kyrgyzstan.
The Kambar-Ata-1 HPP project envisions the construction of a 5.4 billion cubic meter reservoir and a 1,860 MW hydroelectric power plant, which will generate an average of 5.6 billion kWh of electricity per year.
In April 2024, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan agreed to jointly implement this project. Experts estimate the construction cost to exceed $4 billion.
EU experts note the importance of cross-border projects such as the Rogun and Kambarata HPPs, emphasizing their significance for energy security, rational use of water resources, and sustainable agriculture in the Central Asian region.
