Around 1.1 billion people worldwide suffer from varying degrees of water scarcity. In Central Asia alone, glacier area has decreased by approximately 30% over the past 50-60 years, with Uzbekistan ranking 25th in the list of countries suffering from "water stress," Ritmeurasia.ru reports.
"In such conditions, the efficient utilization of existing water sources, including snow and rainwater, is considered one of the most suitable solutions," say members of the Ecological Party of Uzbekistan.
According to experts' estimates, by using rainwater, one person can save an average of up to 71 liters of drinking water per day. Moreover, by substituting drinking water with rainwater in production processes, a significant amount of clean drinking water can be conserved.
Proposing to implement a rainwater harvesting system in Uzbekistan, the Ecological Party points to the positive experiences of other countries, notably Australia, where rainwater meets 9% of urban water needs and 63% of rural water needs.
