An agreement on financing the Rogun project was reached at a meeting between President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon and Vice President of the Islamic Development Bank Group Mansur Mukhtor, Tajik Minister of Economic Development and Trade Zavqi Zavkizoda said, Asiaplustj.info reports.
At a meeting in Dushanbe, the parties agreed to provide Tajikistan with $250 million, of which $150 million is planned to be spent on the construction of the Rogun hydroelectric power station.
As part of that visit, Mansur Mukhtor also got acquainted with the progress of the construction of the Rogun HPP facilities.
Currently, preliminary work is underway to prepare a draft of the relevant agreement, Zavkizoda said.
He stressed that the IDB mainly provides financial assistance in the form of concessional loans, but in this particular case, it will also include a grant element.
On attracting funds from other development partners for the implementation of the Rogun project, Zavkizoda said that "in this direction, the relevant ministries and departments of the country are actively working with potential international donors."
Earlier, the ministry reported that the Tajik government had made a request to raise IDB funds for the construction of the Rogun HPP, which was supported by the Islamic Bank.
The Ministry of Energy of Tajikistan at the beginning of this month reported that the government of Tajikistan is negotiating to attract investment from international financial organizations to complete the construction of the Rogun HPP.
According to the agency, at present, at least $5 billion will be required for the full implementation of the Rogun project.
President Rahmon at the end of December in his message to the Parliament of Tajikistan noted that in 2022, 3.2 billion somoni (about $315 million) were allocated for construction work on Rogun. Taking into account last year's funding, since 2008, more than 40 billion somoni have already been spent on the completion of Rogun.
