Japanese corporation Sojitz plans to invest $200 million in the construction of a new international airport in Tashkent. The announcement was made by the company's president, Kosuke Uemura, in an interview with Uzbekistan 24, according to Gazeta.uz.
Uemura stated that Sojitz intends to invest a total of $1 billion in various projects across Uzbekistan. Key initiatives include a combined-cycle power plant in Syrdarya ($40 million), a 1 GW wind farm in Navoiy region ($180 million), and a multi-functional international hospital in Samarkand ($75 million).
Work on the airport project is already underway. Transport Minister Ilkhom Makhkamov confirmed the new airport will be located 17 km south of the current facility, near the Tashkent–Samarkand highway. The site, designated in the Urta-Chirchik district, covers approximately 1,200 hectares. The airport is scheduled to open by 2030 with an annual passenger capacity of up to 20 million.
In May 2023, Singapore’s Changi Airports International was engaged to develop the project’s feasibility study. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed the construction plans in August 2025.
Sojitz, a major player in energy, infrastructure, and healthcare, opened its Tashkent representative office in July 2024. In 2025, the company signed a roadmap with Uzbekistan to deepen cooperation in key economic sectors.
