The Prime Minister, Olzhas Bektenov, announced that the authorities of Kazakhstan have begun work to identify locations for the construction of the second and third nuclear power plants, reports Vesti.kg.
According to Bektenov, electricity consumption in the country has increased by 14% since 2019, reaching approximately 120 billion kWh.
“Considering the population growth, as well as the ongoing policy for industrial development and digitalization, further increases in energy consumption are anticipated. In this regard, the development of nuclear energy is underway at the direction of the president. The area for the construction of the first nuclear power plant has been identified. Work has begun to determine locations for the construction of two more plants,” noted the head of the government of Kazakhstan.
It is reported that the leadership of Kazakhstan has decided to build the first nuclear power plant in the village of Ulken in the Almaty region.
Earlier, on March 14, the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, announced that he had decided to establish a nuclear energy agency under the President. According to him, the creation of a new energy sector should serve as a foundation for the economic development of the country.
