The Ministry of Defense of Kazakhstan has proposed amending the agreement on the status of the formations of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), the press service of the Kazakh security agency reports, Eurasiatoday.ru reports.
These amendments are aimed at improving the legal framework governing the temporary presence of forces and assets of the collective security system in the territories of the organization's member states.
Kazakhstan's proposal touches upon key aspects of joint security within the CSTO.
Conditions for the deployment of CSTO formations
One of Kazakhstan's central proposals is to clarify the conditions under which CSTO formations can be sent to another member state of the organization.
According to the initiative, such deployment should only be possible in the event of an immediate threat or armed attack on one or more CSTO member states.
In addition, the formations can be used to prevent crises, eliminate emergencies, provide humanitarian aid, conduct joint exercises and surprise inspections.
Joint exercises "Indestructible Brotherhood"
An example of close cooperation between the CSTO countries was the recent exercises "Indestructible Brotherhood", which took place in early October in Kazakhstan.
They involved military contingents from Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan. The events took place at the "Bereg" training ground under the leadership of the Commander of the Airborne Assault Troops of Kazakhstan, Major General Almaz Dzhumakeev.
The joint maneuvers confirmed the importance of coordinating the actions of the Organization's countries in the sphere of collective security.
Political tensions around the CSTO
While Kazakhstan proposes strengthening the legal framework of the CSTO, some member countries of the organization are experiencing internal tensions.
Recent statements by the Russian FSB that the West could have influenced Armenia's decision to leave the CSTO are fueling the political atmosphere within the organization.
Earlier, the Director of the Russian FSB Alexander Bortnikov stated during a meeting of the Council of Heads of Security Agencies and Special Services of the CIS Member States (CHSS):
“The West is putting pressure on Yerevan, forcing the Armenian authorities to withdraw from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), in order to increase its dependence on NATO. If Armenia withdraws from the CSTO, the West promises Yerevan arms supplies on preferential terms.”
This emphasizes that the future of the Collective Security Treaty Organization depends not only on military exercises, but also on political stability and consistency in the actions of all participants.
CSTO exercises to be held in 2024
In 2024, the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) has planned a series of large-scale events aimed at strengthening regional security and improving emergency response mechanisms.
A total of several different military exercises will be held, including:
“Interaction – 2024”;
"Indestructible Brotherhood - 2024",
special exercises "Search - 2024", "Echelon - 2024", "Cobalt - 2024"
joint exercises "Frontier - 2024".
This series of maneuvers emphasizes the CSTO's comprehensive approach to ensuring security, covering various aspects of military and peacekeeping interaction.
Each event contributes to increasing the combat readiness and interoperability of the armed forces of the participating countries, thereby strengthening collective security in the region.
