Kazakhstan receives satellite and other spacecraft from Russia for free

On March 3, 2023, Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, Alikhan Smailov, signed the Decree of the Government of Kazakhstan “On the acceptance of property into republican ownership”. The resolution instructed "to accept into republican property on a gratuitous basis from the federal property of the Russian Federation property in accordance with the annex." The list of property includes: spacecraft "Ekran-M", its components and accessories; assembly and protective unit, its components and spare tools and fixtures; a system for testing objects and two simply "systems", according to the Forbes.kz portal.

Ekran-M is a geostationary direct television communication satellite. The first satellite of this series was released in 1976, upgraded in 1987. "Screens" were originally intended for retransmission of color and black-and-white programs of the central television to the settlements of Siberia and the Far North of Russia. The last satellite in the Ekran series ceased operation on February 1, 2009. The device transferred to Kazakhstan was released in 1991.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin signed a decree on the free transfer of property in the space industry to Kazakhstan in April 2022. The acceptance of the property took place almost a year later.
