In 2025, Kazakhstan plans to allocate 2.5 billion cubic meters of water for environmental releases to support local ecosystems, Kazinform reports, citing the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan.

In 2024, 1.5 billion cubic meters of water were allocated for these purposes. For example:

  • 889 million cubic meters were directed to preserve the lake systems of the Kyzylorda region.
  • 87.5 million cubic meters were allocated to the floodplain of the Shiderty River in the Pavlodar region.
  • 29.7 million cubic meters were released into the Nura River to improve the ecological condition of the Tengiz-Korgalzhyn State Reserve lakes.

Additionally:

  • 90 million cubic meters were directed into the Ilek River in the Aktobe region.
  • 144 million cubic meters were allocated to water management facilities in the Turkestan region.
  • 133 million cubic meters were supplied from the Konayev Big Almaty Canal, a facility under the Kazvodkhoz branch.

“Our ministry plans to fill 219 lakes, irrigate over 204,200 hectares of hayfields, and water 5,230 hectares of forests in river floodplains. This will improve the ecological situation and water supply in coastal areas. The implementation of these measures will also help mitigate drought risks, prevent the loss of grazing lands, and contribute to the sustainable development of agriculture and local ecosystems,” said Kudaybergen Korganbayev, Director of the Department for Water Infrastructure Development.
