Kazakhstani Tasmagambetov heads CSTO Secretariat

Kazakhstani Imangali Tasmagambetov will act as Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said during a meeting of the Organization's Council of Heads of State.

"Since from the beginning of 2023, in the next three years, the duties of the CSTO Secretary General will be performed by the representative of Kazakhstan, Imangali Nurgalievich Tasmagambetov, I think it will be justified if the respected Kassym-Jomart Kemelevich introduces him to us if he considers it appropriate," Pashinyan said at a meeting of the Council in Erevan.

Imangali Nurgalievich Tasmagambetov was born in the village of Novobogat, Guryev Region, on December 9, 1956.
In 1979 he graduated from the Faculty of Natural Geography of Ural Pedagogical Institute named after A.S. Pushkin.

From 1993 to 1995 he was Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In 1998, 1999 he was the first assistant to the President of Kazakhstan.

In 2002 and 2003 he was the prime minister, and then in 2003-2004 he worked as the State Secretary of Kazakhstan.

From 2004 to 2008 he was the akim of the city of Almaty, and in the period from 2008 to 2014 he headed the city of Astana.

Then he was appointed Minister of Defense of Kazakhstan - from 2014 to 2016.

His last official position in a public post was Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Russia from 2017 to 2019.

According to the CSTO Charter, his candidacy for the post of Secretary General was proposed by the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the CSTO and approved by the other structures of the Organization.
