As of October 1, 2023, Kazakhstan's external debt amounted to $161.9 billion, which is 0.8% higher than in the same period the previous year, according to the report from the National Bank of Kazakhstan, LS reports.
The Netherlands, a major creditor, holds the largest share with Kazakhstan owing $42.5 billion (+2.1% compared to October 1, 2022). The United Kingdom follows with $14 billion (-7.8%), international organizations with $13 billion (-0.3%), and Russia with $12.5 billion (-18.3%).
Over the year, Kazakhstan's obligations to the UAE noticeably increased from $2.7 billion to $3.6 billion (+33.3%). Additionally, there is a significant level of debt to the United States, France, Bermuda, China, and Japan.
Regarding the structure of Kazakhstan's external debt, the banking sector accounts for $10.6 billion, which is 32.5% higher than the figure on October 1, 2022. The external debt of government bodies exceeds $12 billion (-3.1%), and that of the National Bank is $2.1 billion (+2.9%).
