Kyrgyz film received main prize at Asia's largest film festival in Busan

The Kyrgyz full-length film "Kyz Ala Kachuu" (Thift a girl) by director Mirlan Abdykalykov won the top prize in the competition program at the 28th Busan International Film Festival in South Korea, told by producer Altynai Koichumanova, 24.kg news agency reports.

The film had its world premiere at the festival, with the participation of international film critics who gave positive reviews.

The JiSeok competition section is dedicated to recognized Asian filmmakers who have directed three or more feature films. The award, established in memory of the program director Kim Ji-seok, is presented to the two best films in this section.

In addition to the Kyrgyz film, this competition section included works from Japan, China, Indonesia, Bangladesh, South Korea, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines, totaling 10 films.

In his new film, director Mirlan Abdykalykov addresses the pressing issue of bride kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan through the dramatic story of a Kyrgyz girl named Ymüt. The film aims to explore the reasons behind this phenomenon and the roles played by both the kidnappers and society as a whole. The film was shot in the newly built areas of Bishkek.

The Busan International Film Festival is the largest film festival in Asia. It has been held annually in the South Korean city of Busan since 1996 and specializes in showcasing the works of emerging directors.
