Kyrgyzstan annually imports about 4.5 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity from neighboring countries due to a shortfall in domestic generation. This was stated by Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Adylbek Kasymaliev while speaking at a joint meeting of parliamentary committees, 24.kg reports.
According to him, economic growth and population increase have led to higher electricity consumption. At present, the country’s total annual demand stands at around 19 billion kWh, while domestic electricity generation only slightly exceeds 14 billion kWh.
“The missing volumes — approximately 4.5 billion kilowatt-hours — are imported by Kyrgyzstan from Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Russia,” the head of the Cabinet of Ministers noted. He also said that in December the country’s first solar power plant with a capacity of 100 MW is expected to be commissioned in the city of Kemin.
Commenting on lawmakers’ concerns regarding the conversion of pasture lands for energy facilities, Kasymaliev emphasized that such decisions are made in coordination with local authorities and provide revenues to local budgets, which, he said, is in the interests of the population.
