The National Electric Grid of Kyrgyzstan (NESK) has announced short-term restrictions on electricity consumption in the country, particularly during peak hours from 06:00 to 09:00 in the morning and from 18:00 to 21:00 in the evening.
These restrictions are implemented due to the start of the reconstruction of the Toktogul and Uch-Kurgan hydro units, which began on March 5, anounced NESK.
"To prevent emergency situations related to increased electricity consumption, work has begun on temporarily reducing the installed capacity on the meters of subscribers. With the decrease in electricity consumption and the expected warming, uninterrupted power supply will stabilize," reported NESK.
This information was also confirmed by the Minister of Energy, Taalaibek Ibraev, during a meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh on March 6. Responding to deputies' questions, the minister mentioned that the reconstruction of the Toktogul and Uch-Kurgan hydro units was initially scheduled to start on February 20 but was delayed to March 5 due to cold weather.
Ibraev added that temporary restrictions on electricity will be lifted after March 10. According to him, after this date, warmer weather is expected, leading to a reduction in electricity consumption among the population.
Earlier, the Deputy Minister of Energy, Taalaibek Baygaziev, had already urged citizens to save electricity due to a sharp decrease in the volume of water in the Toktogul reservoir. He emphasized that the current water volume in the reservoir is the lowest in recent years and called on citizens to use heating equipment more rationally during morning and evening hours.
