Kyrgyzstan will allocate $1.5 billion for the construction of the Kambar-Ata-1 Hydropower Plant, Minister of Energy Taalaibek Ibraev said in an interview with Birinchi Radio.

According to him, Kyrgyzstan’s contribution will include not only financial resources but also land, water resources, and $70 million already allocated for preparatory and infrastructure work — including the construction of access roads and a residential complex for specialists.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $4.5 billion. The construction will be jointly financed by Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan, with each country contributing an equal share. The Board of Directors of the future hydropower plant will be headed by representatives of Kyrgyzstan, underscoring the country’s leading role in implementing the project.

“There are no risks — we will not lose anything. Our neighbors must cooperate,” Ibraev emphasized, highlighting the strategic importance of this joint initiative.

The Kambar-Ata-1 Hydropower Plant will become the largest in Kyrgyzstan and one of the most powerful in Central Asia.

  • Installed capacity: 1,860 megawatts

  • Annual generation: over 5 billion kilowatt-hours

  • Dam height: 256 meters — one of the tallest in the region

  • Reservoir volume: more than 5.4 billion cubic meters

Once operational, the power plant will enable Kyrgyzstan to expand electricity exports to neighboring countries and reduce seasonal shortages at home. Experts note that Kambar-Ata-1 will create thousands of jobs during construction and provide a strong boost to regional infrastructure development.
