The results of the assessment of migration trends in Kyrgyzstan were presented by the Ministry of Labor, Social Security, and Migration of Kyrgyzstan and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) at a joint conference in Bishkek, reports Kabar.

The results of the joint migration assessment show that the number of returning migrants continues to grow, highlighting the need for a comprehensive, evidence-based migration policy, said Kyrgyzstan’s Deputy Minister of Labor and Migration, Darmankul uulu Bakyt.

The study revealed that from 2020 to April 2024, there was an increase in return migration, indicating a significant change in Kyrgyzstan’s migration structure. In 2023, the number of returning migrants rose by 85% compared to the previous year. Osh, Chui, and Batken regions lead in the number of returning migrants.

The number of citizens planning to migrate again to the country they returned from has halved, while 16% of respondents were unsure about their future plans, not knowing what to do next.

At the presentation ceremony, it was emphasized that migration data is essential to understanding the complex dynamics of population movements and their impact on society and the economy. Comprehensive migration data plays a key role in decision-making and policy development, shaping the future of communities, economic development, and international relations.

The conference is part of the IOM projects "Labor Migration Program in Central Asia," supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), and "Regional Evidence for Migration Analysis and Policy (REMAP)," funded by the European Union.
