More than 1 million migrant workers from Tajikistan currently reside in Russia, the press releases from the Russian Kremlin regarding the meeting between the leaders of the two countries, Vladimir Putin and Emomali Rahmon, noted.
"Approximately 1.2 million migrant workers from Tajikistan are in Russia, enjoying significant preferences. Specifically, Tajik citizens have an extended stay period in Russian territory without registration (15 days), and the opportunity to obtain a patent for up to three years," the statement said.
Furthermore, both sides are paying considerable attention to the development of cooperation in the humanitarian sphere. "Over 35,000 Tajik students and postgraduates are studying in Russian universities, with around 25,500 on a budgetary basis," the Kremlin highlighted.
In 2022, five schools with Russian-language instruction based on Russian standards were opened in Tajikistan - in Dushanbe, Kulob, Khujand, Bokhtar, and Tursunzade. Currently, plans for the construction of an educational center for gifted children in Dushanbe and a new building for the Russian Mayakovsky Drama Theater are being worked out. "The implementation of these projects aims to further strengthen humanitarian cooperation," emphasized the materials.
President Rahmon is on an official visit to Moscow and held negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
During the bilateral meeting, Putin noted the progressive development of bilateral relations. "Our relations are developing progressively and are at a very high level. It's enough to say that Russia is Tajikistan's main trade and economic partner, accounting for almost 23% (22.9%) of Tajikistan's trade turnover. We hold one of the leading positions in direct investments - $1.6 billion," said Putin.
He also mentioned significant preferences for 1.2 million Tajik migrant workers in Russia.
Following the talks, Vladimir Putin awarded Emomali Rahmon the Russian Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" III degree. The award ceremony took place in the Kremlin after the negotiations, according to TASS.
Putin had signed the corresponding decree back in October 2022. Rahmon was honored with the state award for his substantial personal contribution to strengthening the strategic partnership and alliance between Russia and Tajikistan, as well as ensuring regional stability and security.
In 2017, Rahmon was also awarded the Order of Alexander Nevsky for his significant personal contribution to strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation between Russia and Tajikistan.
Accompanying President Rahmon to Moscow were the Minister of Foreign Affairs, heads of the Ministries of Defense and Internal Affairs, the Ministries of Economic Development and Energy, the head of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan, and other high-ranking officials.
