Population of Kazakhstan approached 20 mln people

During the first seven months of 2023, the population of Kazakhstan increased by 154.6 thousand people, or 0.78%. As of August 1, the country's population reached 19,921 thousand people, the Kazakhstan National Statistics Bureau informs.

The largest population growth from January to July was observed in Nur-Sultan (Astana) - 2.7%, Almaty - 1.66%, Mangystau Region - 1.51%, Shymkent - 1.35%, and Atyrau Region - 0.97%.

The population of Nur-Sultan as of August 1 was 1,391.2 thousand people, Almaty - 2,197.7 thousand, Shymkent - 1,208.3 thousand.

Overall, population growth was observed in 16 regions of Kazakhstan during January-July 2023, with only four regions - Abay, East Kazakhstan, Kostanay, and North Kazakhstan - experiencing a decrease in population. North Kazakhstan Region still reports a natural population decline, where mortality exceeds births.

Migration outflow continues in 15 out of 20 regions of Kazakhstan. Migration growth in the population is only observed in Almaty Region, Mangystau Region, Shymkent, Almaty, and Nur-Sultan.

In total, the migration balance was positive in Kazakhstan during the first seven months of 2023.

The urban population of the country grew by 1.08% to 12,342.3 thousand people in January-July, while the rural population increased by 0.29% to a total of 7,579.2 thousand people. The urban population accounts for 61.9% of Kazakhstan's total, while the rural population makes up 38.1%.

In terms of population size, Kazakhstan is the second-largest country in Central Asia after Uzbekistan, with a population exceeding 36 million people.
