President of Tajikistan and head of European Council held talks in Cholpon-Ata

President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon met with President of the European Council Charles Michel in the city of Cholpon-Ata, the press service of the President of Tajikistan reports.

The parties at the meeting exchanged views on the state and prospects of cooperation between Tajikistan and the European Union with an emphasis on attracting European investment and providing technical and financial assistance to Tajikistan in the implementation of projects and programs for the socio-economic development of the country.

President Rahmon noted the need to accelerate the process of Tajikistan's accession to the EU's Generalized System of Preferences, which will serve as a factor in deepening trade and economic cooperation with the European Union.

The parties also discussed issues related to countering security challenges and threats with an emphasis on the situation in Afghanistan.

The meeting was held in a constructive atmosphere.

Rahmon and Michel arrived in Kyrgyzstan to attend the Central Asia-European Union summit, which is taking place in Cholpon-Ata. The heads of states of Central Asia and the Deputy Prime Minister of Turkmenistan take part in its work.
