The World Food Program (WFP) has opened a second warehouse in the Uzbek city of Termez on the border with Afghanistan to facilitate the delivery of food aid to Afghans, Avesta reports citing the TOLOnews TV channel.

WFP Representative in Afghanistan Wahidullah Amani said that at least 1,000 tons of food is transported from Uzbekistan to Afghanistan every day.

“Increasing the capacity (through) the new warehouse in Termez will help us properly cover the 20 million people (in Afghanistan) who are currently starving and in need of food assistance. We will be able to better distribute our food aid among them,” Amani said.

WFP officials said the program provided food assistance to 23 million people in Afghanistan in 2022. According to various estimates, the population of Afghanistan is 34 million people. $1.5 billion is needed to fulfill WFP's plans to address Afghanistan's humanitarian issues.

The humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan began after the radical Taliban seized power in the country in August 2021, which for 20 years has been fighting against the current Afghan government and the foreign military supporting it.

Most foreign donors refused to cooperate with the Taliban. At the same time, all neighboring countries of Afghanistan provide assistance to the Afghans. Uzbekistan has become the main transit center for the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Afghans.
