President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdymukhamedov has been awarded the title of Hero of Turkmenistan, the state news agency TDH reports.
The corresponding decision was made by the parliament of Turkmenistan. During the session of the People's Council of the country, it was noted that the "Turkmen leader's significant personal contribution to strengthening the principles of national independence and neutrality of Turkmenistan, outstanding services to the state and society, as well as innovative initiatives" were remarkable.
This award is the highest degree of distinction and is conferred upon citizens for exceptional contributions to the state and people of Turkmenistan.
Serdar Berdymukhamedov assumed the office of President of Turkmenistan in March 2022 after winning the presidential elections with 72.97% of the vote. His predecessor in this position was Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, the father of the current Turkmenistan leader.
In the winter of 2022, Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov announced that he had made a "difficult decision" and expressed his desire to step down from his post in favor of the young leader. He had held this position for nearly 15 years.
