On June 29, the city of Arkadag will be solemnly opened in Turkmenistan. It will be a demonstration of advanced urbanism and technology approaches, Turkmen media reported.

Built according to world standards, the city is spread over an area of more than 1,000 hectares. Arkadag was built according to the "smart city" concept, where the achievements of digital technologies will ensure a comfortable life for citizens.

The organizers of the opening ceremony of the city expect a large number of foreign guests, including high-ranking politicians. Among the participants of the ceremony will be, including: Head of the Council of Mayors of Germany Arndt Steinbach, Governor of the People's Government of Shanxi Province (PRC) Zhao Gang, Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin, Mayor of the Turkish city of Kutahya Alim Yshyk and Chief Executive of Baku Azizov Eldar Aziz oglu and Song Bok Chol - Special Adviser on Economic Policy to the Mayor of Busan (Republic of Korea).

The decision to build was made in the fall of 2018. “Over time, the administrative center of the Akhal velayat should become no less impressive in its architecture than our white marble capital,” Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said then, being the Head of State. The new city is located just 30 km from Ashgabat.

In April 2019, Berdimuhamedov Sr. took part in the groundbreaking ceremony, and six months later, work began.

About 70,000 people are expected to live in Arkadag. At the first stage of development, 384 objects were going to be built on an area of about 700 hectares, including 258 residential buildings. Local media call Arkadag a “smart” city, where, for example, traffic lights are “controlled by digital technologies”, and ballot boxes “are able to report to the relevant service about their filling and be controlled using digital technologies.” It is envisaged that the new city will be environmentally friendly - in particular, it will use solar panels, electric taxis and electric buses.
