In northern Afghanistan, there are large reserves of narcotics that are supplied to the countries of Central Asia and Europe, stated the director of the Drug Control Agency of Tajikistan, Zafar Samad, Eurasia Today reports.

"The threat to the countries of Central Asia, especially those bordering Afghanistan, is gradually increasing, as methamphetamine directed to the region is produced in Afghanistan," said Samad.

However, the official representative of the Taliban, Zabihullah Mujahid, assured that serious efforts are being made in Afghanistan to combat the illegal drug trade.

He also called on neighbors to cooperate with the Islamic Emirate on this issue.

At the end of February, the Minister of Defense of Russia, Sergei Shoigu, stated that the increase in production and trafficking of drugs in Central Asia could reach 20%. The situation in the region remains complex. The greatest threat still emanates from the territory of Afghanistan.

This is despite the fact that the Taliban have banned opium cultivation on their territory and their plantings have been significantly reduced. However, according to Iran's statements, the volume of drug shipments from Afghanistan has not decreased.
