Almost a fifth of Tajikistan’s imports in the first half of 2023 were food products, Asia-plus reports.

In the structure of imports during this period, the share of food products amounted to 18.1%, the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Tajikistan reported.

In particular, 10.6% of food products were imported for processing (for example, wheat), and 7.5% for consumption (finished food products).

More than 9% of Tajikistan's imports were occupied by such goods as land means of transport - 13.1%, petroleum products - 11.7%, technological equipment - 8.9%.

Imports of goods in the first half of this year amounted to over $2.7 billion, which is 19.1% ($438.4 million) more compared to the same period in 2022.

“The increase in import indicators was mainly due to an increase in the volume of imports of wheat, petroleum products, liquefied gas, technological equipment, electrical machines and equipment, aircraft, wood and products, as well as the number of ground vehicles, etc.,” they emphasize trade department.

Meanwhile, more than a third of Tajikistan's exports came from natural resources. The share of minerals in exports in the first half of this year was 34.7%.

Comparatively more goods, in addition to minerals, were exported from the country such as cotton fiber - 15.1%, primary aluminum and products made from it - 10.5%, antimony - 8.1%.

Exports of goods in January-June of this year amounted to $678.6 million, which is 44.2% ($536.6 million) less than in the same period in 2022.

“The main factor in the decline in the export indicator is the decrease in the volume of exports of precious metals, minerals, cotton fiber and primary aluminum,” the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Tajikistan emphasizes.
