In the energy sector of Tajikistan, 36 investment projects worth $2.7 billion have been implemented since 2001. Currently, 18 investment projects worth $1.5 billion are being implemented. They are aimed at the construction of large hydroelectric projects and renewable energy sources (solar and wind), with a capacity of at least 1500 MW.
This was announced by the Minister of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan, Daler Juma, at the regional conference "Prospects for the Development of Renewable Energy in the Republic of Tajikistan," which is being held in Dushanbe, Asiaplus.tj reports.
The initiators of the event are the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan, the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan, and the Association of Renewable Energy Sources of Tajikistan.
The purpose of the conference is to promote the development of renewable energy sources, energy saving, and energy efficiency, as well as to define the mechanism of cross-border electricity trade.
Daler Juma reminded that according to the National Development Strategy of Tajikistan until 2030, it is necessary to increase electricity generation capacity to 10 GW, increase electricity exports to 10 billion kWh, reduce electricity losses to 10%, and ensure that 10% of the existing capacity comes from other energy sources (solar, wind, etc.).
Annually, about 98% of the electricity generated in the country comes from hydroelectric power plants. Along with the positive environmental and financial aspects of this indicator, it significantly increases the sector's dependence on river water flow and weather conditions in the context of climate change.
In order to diversify electricity production capacity from other sources, cooperation with development partners on the construction of solar power plants continues today.
Accordingly, among the 18 investment projects currently being implemented in the country worth $1.5 billion, a number of priority projects of local and regional significance in renewable energy sources are envisaged to achieve key sectoral goals by 2030.
