The Board of Directors of the World Bank has approved a grant of $15 million in technical assistance to Tajikistan to improve the efficiency of the implementation of the Rogun HPP project, the Bank's representative office said in a statement, Finmarket reports.

Funding is being provided by the International Development Association (IDA) to support the Government of Tajikistan in improving the financial and commercial framework for the Rogun HPP and enhancing its technical, environmental and social sustainability performance.

"The Rogun HPP project, which is under construction, has the potential to bring significant economic, social and environmental benefits to Tajikistan and other Central Asian countries if implemented in a financially, environmentally and socially sustainable manner," the report said.

The IDA grant is intended to finance the hiring of experts in dam safety and environmental and social frameworks to help make the necessary improvements that will bring the Rogun HPP project up to date with the hydropower industry and in line with the WB Environmental and Social Policy Framework.

The Rogun HPP will be the largest hydroelectric power plant in Central Asia, with an installed capacity of 3,600 MW. The annual volume of electricity generation after the plant is fully commissioned will be from 13 to 17 billion kilowatt-hours. This is approximately 65%-85% of the annual electricity generation by all operating capacities in the republic.

In general, it is planned to install six units in the turbine hall of the station, the design capacity of each of which will be 600 MW. The launch of the last unit of the station is scheduled for 2029. The construction of the station is expected to be fully completed by 2033.
