Para judoka Shohrukh Nazarov has won Tajikistan’s first medal at the Asian Para Games, taking silver in the men’s 81 kg J1 category, reported Asia-Plus.
The 5th Asian Para Games were held in Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya, Japan, from October 18 to 24, with about 3,000 athletes from 45 countries. Nazarov won three bouts to reach the final, where he lost to Uzbekistan’s Shohrukh Mamedov.
Tajikistan had taken part in the Games four times since 2010 without reaching the podium. This year it sent 10 athletes in six sports and finished joint 28th in the medal table.
Asian Paralympic Committee President Rashid Majid congratulated the country in a letter to Mahmoud Amonzoda, head of the Paralympic Committee of Tajikistan. He praised Tajikistan’s contribution to developing Paralympic sport in the region.
Nazarov will be rewarded at home. Amonzoda proposed giving him an apartment, and the Judo Federation, headed by Ismoil Mahmadzoir, announced a cash prize of 150,000 somoni.
