Possible ways to accelerate the implementation of a 500 kV power transmission project from Uzbekistan to Afghanistan were discussed during a video conference between the head of the Afghan energy company Breshna Sherkat, Abdul Bari Omar, and the Minister of Energy of Uzbekistan, Eurasiatoday.ru reports.
An agreement between the relevant agencies of the two countries has already been reached, and the parties are currently discussing the details of the project launch.
The initiative is expected to provide up to 800 megawatts of electricity to help address shortages in Kabul and the eastern provinces of Afghanistan.
Despite importing electricity from four neighboring countries, residents in various regions of Afghanistan - including the capital - regularly report outages and power shortages, especially during peak winter and summer seasons.
Meanwhile, Breshna Sherkat - Afghanistan's energy company controlled by the Taliban - faces allegations of corruption and mismanagement of funds. These concerns raise further doubts about the project's transparency and effectiveness.
The electricity supply situation remains critical, and even new international agreements do not guarantee that households and industries will receive the power they need.
