Turkey Shows Growing Interest in Turkmen Gas

Turkey intends to establish short-term supplies of Turkmen gas to the European market through swap transactions, viewing the Trans-Caspian Gas Pipeline as a strategic goal for the future. Turkish Ambassador Ahmet Demirok announced this at a press conference in Ashgabat, emphasizing that the current "window of opportunity" for exporting resources to the West is limited in time, Hronikatm.com reports.

According to the diplomat, Ankara sees enormous potential in cooperation with Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan to implement the Trans-Caspian Pipeline. This large-scale project will allow Turkmen fuel to be directly supplied to Turkey and from there to Europe.

"We believe that now is a favorable time for Turkmen gas to enter Western markets. It is important to begin work as soon as possible," Demirok noted, adding that Turkey is also interested in the transit of Turkmen electricity in the future.

The diplomat recalled the significance of the February 10, 2025, agreement between Botaş and Turkmengaz, which provides for the export of up to 2 billion cubic meters of gas per year through Iran under a swap agreement. Despite the fact that in October 2025, Turkmengaz CEO Maksat Babayev announced a temporary suspension of supplies to resolve technical issues, Ankara continues to view Turkmenistan as a reliable strategic partner.

The implementation of these contracts is intended not only to strengthen the energy security of Turkey and the region but also to confirm Turkmenistan's status as a key player in the global energy market.
