The authorities of Turkmenistan will propose an international legal document, the "Treaty on the Zone Free from the Death Penalty in Central Asia and Mongolia," at the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, which will open on September 12th in New York, the Turkmenistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced, RIA Novosti reports.

This is stated in Turkmenistan's Priority Positions for the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, a document published on the website of the Turkmen Foreign Ministry.

It notes that Turkmenistan became the first country in Central Asia to abolish the death penalty, and currently, the countries of Central Asia and Mongolia have the potential to become the first region free from the death penalty. In this context, "Turkmenistan proposes to consider the development and adoption of an international legal document for the Central Asian region and Mongolia, the 'Treaty on the Zone Free from the Death Penalty in Central Asia and Mongolia.'"

"Subsequently, such a document could lay the foundation for the development and adoption of a Convention on the Abolition of the Death Penalty, initiated by this region to contribute to the global abolition of the death penalty," emphasized Turkmenistan's Priority Positions for the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
