Turkmenistan and Afghanistan agree to increase volume of cargo transportation by rail

Representatives of the Herat branch of the Afghan Railway Administration and the Turkmen state railway company Demiryollary held talks to agree on an increase in the volume of traffic on the railway line between the Turkmen city of Serkhetabad and the Afghan Turgundi. As a result, all agreements were reached, TASS reports with reference to the Afghan Railway Administration.

The parties reached an agreement on increasing transit through the Turkmen railway, as well as on the safe transportation of commercial cargo from Turkmenistan and on improving the management of the port of Turgundi.

Most of the imports still arrive in Afghanistan through the territory of Uzbekistan, the participants of the meeting noted.

The railway between the Turkmen Serhetabat and the Afghan border town of Turgundi was built in 1982, its length is 5.5 km.

Earlier, Turkmenistan upgraded this branch, significantly increasing its capacity.
