A new GIZ project, "EU for Green Development of Turkmenistan: Political Dialogue and Climate Action for 2024-2028," was officially launched in Ashgabat, reports Turkmenportal.tm.

The project, financed by the European Union and the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, aims to support Turkmenistan's sustainable development actions by applying advanced international experience and EU standards.

The launch of the project was preceded by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation between the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan, the State Concern "Turkmengaz," and the German GIZ in May this year. The agreement was reached on the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the EU and Turkmenistan, highlighting the importance of strengthening bilateral partnerships in the fields of energy, environmental protection, and climate policy.

Project leader Karolina Milov noted that the main activities will focus on establishing an effective dialogue between the EU and Turkmenistan’s government bodies to promote renewable energy sources and improve energy efficiency by reducing methane and greenhouse gas emissions. The project also aims to enhance the capacity of state institutions in developing necessary climate adaptation measures.

Two pilot projects will be implemented under the initiative, demonstrating adaptation measures in the use of renewable energy sources, energy storage and detection, as well as the monitoring and reduction of methane emissions. These projects will be carried out in collaboration with the State Concern "Turkmengaz" and the State Energy Institute of the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan.

Participants of the meeting expressed confidence that joint efforts will lead to the achievement of the project's goals, contributing to the prevention of negative climate change consequences in the region and globally.
