The main stage of the International competition of scientific and design works entitled “The role of youth in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals” has started at the Turkmen Agricultural University named after S.A. Niyazov in Ashgabad. The competition is dedicated to World Environment Day.

Based on the results of this stage, 38 individual and joint promising scientific projects qualified for the finals - 8 from foreign participants and 30 representatives of Turkmen universities. The selected projects, if implemented, can contribute to the development of 6 areas of the Sustainable Development Goals: eradication of hunger, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, combating climate change, preserving the marine ecosystem, the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reports.

In total, 130 projects were submitted to the competition from students of universities in Uzbekistan, Russia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, the Republic of Korea, Latvia, Malaysia, Poland, Montenegro and Slovenia.

In 2015, the UN adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Turkmenistan, which was among the first countries to officially adopt all 17 Sustainable Development Goals, took an active part in its development.

Holding various competitions on the Sustainable Development Goals has become a good tradition in the country; they are held both at the state level and on an international scale.

At the beginning of May this year, university students in Turkmenistan took part in the International Online Olympiad “Sustainable Development Goals in Central Asia, Afghanistan and Mongolia,” organized by the Kazakh-German University. 4th year student Jora Dzhumakulov, studying in the specialization “hydromelioration” at the Turkmen Agricultural University named after S.A. Niyazov, took 1st place.
