The burning gas crater in the Karakum desert, called the "Gates of Hell" and which has become one of the sights of Turkmenistan, is being prepared to be extinguished after more than 50 years.
Specialists have already developed the necessary project, Irina Luryeva, head of the laboratory at the specialized research institute of the state concern Turkmengas, said. It is planned, if possible, to divert gas from the burning well. To do this, a new well will be drilled nearby, which will take gas from the crater.
The project is being coordinated in the relevant departments of the country.
