Due to Islamic religious tradition, people in Central Asian countries are more indifferent to alcohol: in Kazakhstan, they consume 5.4 liters, in Kyrgyzstan – 3.9 liters, and in Uzbekistan – just 2.1 liters.

The lowest figures in the post-Soviet space were recorded in Tajikistan (0.7 liters) and Turkmenistan (0.3 liters), according to a report by the World Population Review portal, as reported by IslamNews.

Countries in Eastern and Central Europe hold the lead in alcohol consumption. Romania tops the list (17.1 liters of pure alcohol per person per year), followed by Georgia (15.5 liters) and Latvia (14.7 liters). Among the CIS countries, the leading alcohol consumption levels are Moldova (14.1 liters), Belarus (11.4 liters), and Russia (10.5 liters).

In July 2025, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov approved the National Program for the Prevention of the Harmful Effects of Alcohol in Turkmenistan for 2025–2028. According to official documents, the program was adopted "with the aim of achieving the spiritual and physical health of the population, further improving the health of citizens, increasing well-being, and increasing life expectancy."
