Number of labor migrants in Kazakhstan decrease

In the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Population of Kazakhstan, data on the number of foreign citizens engaged in labor activities in Kazakhstan were provided, Zakon.kz reports.

As of September 1, 2023, 14,571 foreign citizens are engaged in labor activities in Kazakhstan according to permits issued by local executive authorities.

A month earlier, the number of labor migrants in Kazakhstan was 14,702 people. Thus, there are 131 fewer of them now.

Among the permits for the attraction of foreign labor force (FLF), the following categories exist:

  • 527 permits for managers and their deputies (first category).
  • 2,732 permits for managers of structural units (second category).

"The majority of attracted FLF belongs to the third (specialists) and fourth (skilled workers) categories – 6,322 and 727 people, respectively. Additionally, 1,956 people were attracted for seasonal work, and 2,307 people within the framework of corporate transfers," the press service of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Population of Kazakhstan reported.

According to the department's data, there are currently 1,424 employers in Kazakhstan using FLF. More than 474,400 Kazakhstanis are employed by them, accounting for 97% of the total workforce.

In terms of economic activities, the largest number of people work in the following sectors:

  • Construction – 4,986 people (34%).
  • Agriculture, forestry, and fishing – 1,867 people (12.7%).
  • Mining and quarrying – 1,359 people (9.3%).
  • Manufacturing – 1,219 people (8.3%).
  • Professional, scientific, and technical activities – 901 people (6%).

The main countries of origin for labor migrants are:

  • China – 3,771 people (26.2%).
  • Uzbekistan – 2,002 people (13.3%).
  • Turkey – 1,370 people (9.2%).
  • India – 1,363 people (9.4%).

"For the protection of the domestic labor market, the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Population of Kazakhstan annually sets and distributes quotas for attracting foreign specialists to the republic. In 2023, the total quota is set at 0.24% of the labor force in the republic, which equals 22,260 individuals," the press service of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Population of Kazakhstan stated.

On September 26, 2023, the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Population of the Republic of Kazakhstan provided data on ethnic Kazakhs who have returned to their historical homeland.
